Institution Background and Purpose of the Policy

Institution Background

Internet is provided at the Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School via the standard service the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training facilitates using local service provider Digicel.  However, as the department in question (the Special Unit) is on the bottom floor, the internet connection is very poor and the signal is weak.  A separate internet connection was privately acquired for the Department to allow teachers and students to access the internet for the purposes of teaching and learning.  This means that separate guidelines must be put in place to govern the use of this internet connection and technology.
      In terms of the student body, the Special Unit caters to thirty-nine students with varying degrees of learning disabilities.  The language of the AUP has therefore been tailored to meet the level of understanding of the students in question.

Purpose of the Policy

This policy is designed to;

·     Provide guidelines on how the technological devices which are the property of the Charles F Broome Special Unit should be used.

·     Detail restrictions for use of the wireless internet connection on personal mobile devices.

·     Provide a measure of accountability for student users of the internet or technological devices.

·     Ensure parents are partly accountable for their child/ward’s use of the internet and technological devices.

·     Detail the consequences for misuse of the internet or technological devices.

  1. Under the purpose of the policy you noted that there was a separate internet connection from the main school. Is this connection paid for by the school or the teacher? If so how will you be able to control what is done on the staff's personal devices. Also, are parents allowed or have access the school that separate internet connection? Just a few things that crossed my mind.

    1. Well honestly it is paid for by the staff as to go without reliable connection was too inconvenient. I understand how that may pose an issue in terms of exercising control though. I really have to give it some thought. No the parents don't have access to the wireless internet network.

    2. I added a post on acceptable use specifically directed to teachers and parent volunteers who would have access to the wireless internet connection (Acceptable Use and Regulations) to address your second question.

  2. Good idea to use language that the students would understand. Its good that the Unit is not totally dependent on the Ministry since a private internet connection was acquired.

  3. I donot want to be redundant, but has there been a change to where our technology comes from. I am seeing another area of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. Is this another area where technology has been coming from?
